Uluwatu Temple & Kecak Fire Dance
Clifftop temple at the edge of the island, paired with a hypnotic Kecak fire dance performed at sunset.
The day
Uluwatu is Bali's most dramatic temple — a 10th-century shrine perched on a 70-metre limestone cliff at the southwestern tip of the island. The real magic happens just before sunset, when 50+ men in checked sarongs form a circle in the open-air amphitheatre and chant 'cak-cak-cak' in polyrhythmic layers while a Ramayana-based fire dance unfolds in front of them. It's genuinely hypnotic, and it happens every evening regardless of the weather. Made gets you there early enough to walk the clifftop paths, watch the monkeys (hold onto your sunglasses), and find a good seat for the performance. We can add a seafood dinner at nearby Jimbaran Bay on the way home — grilled on the beach, tables in the sand.
