East Bali: Lempuyang Gates of Heaven
The iconic 'Gates of Heaven' framing Mount Agung, plus the water palace of Tirta Gangga and rolling east Bali rice country.
The day
Lempuyang is the temple on everyone's phone — the two split gates framing Mount Agung's perfect volcano cone. The photo looks like a reflection, but it's actually a trick mirror held under the phone by the on-site staff (locals are upfront about this — most visitors don't mind). Either way, the temple is stunning and the drive through east Bali's lesser-travelled villages is half the point. We'll also visit Tirta Gangga, a photogenic 1940s royal water palace with stepping stones across koi-filled pools, and Taman Ujung, another nearby water palace that feels like a hidden gem. The early start is to beat the Lempuyang queue — arrive after 10:00 and you'll wait 90 minutes for the photo.
