North Bali: Sekumpul & Ulun Danu

The day

North Bali is quieter, cooler, and more rugged than the south — and Sekumpul Falls is the reason to make the trip. It's actually a cluster of seven waterfalls in a single jungle amphitheatre, reached via a guided trek that includes a short river crossing. The trek is the kind of thing you'll tell stories about for years. On the way back we stop at Ulun Danu Beratan, the iconic Hindu-Buddhist temple that appears to float on Lake Beratan in the misty mountain highlands — one of Bali's most photographed shrines. Bring a layer: it's genuinely cool up there. It's a long day but one of the most rewarding on the island.

   Sekumpul Falls

   Swim, photograph, rest at the main viewpoint.

4. 14:00

   Lunch

   Highland warung with valley views.

5. 15:30

   Ulun Danu Beratan

   Lakeside temple and gardens.

6. 18:00

   Return

   Back at your hotel by early evening.
